Believe it or not, leaving it at the default did not seem to work and selecting it explicitly does.Įmail Address: Mail Server: Note that I've configured Mail to use custom port 587, despite the fact that port 587 is the default for SMTP with SSL. Below are the Mail preferences that work. So I reconfigured Mail to use for both IMAP and SMTP, with SSL enabled. Their server for mobile clients () only supports IMAP, not POP.

I was uncomfortable with that and wanted to turn on SSL to avoid it, but Charter only supports SSL on their email server for mobile clients. I switched from successfully using Charter's email servers for desktops ( and ) because they don't support SSL, which meant that Mail had to send passwords unencrypted. Why would the initial attempt always fail? Second, incoming email is often not received by Mail for ages, sometimes hours, even though it is visible on the IMAP server when I use Charter's web email client, and Mail does not show that the server is inaccessible. The retry interval for sending is 5 minutes, so I assume that the initial attempt by Mail to login to the IMAP server is always failing and the following retry attempt is always succeeding. That is, it always sits in Outgoing for exactly 5 minutes after I hit Send. First, outgoing email is always delayed by exactly 5 minutes. Both of these servers do support SSL connections.I have gotten Charter email to work with OS X, more or less, but have two remaining issues I'd appreciate help with. The names of the servers are also different. Here you will need to have the incoming server set for IMAP. Under the Advanced tab, set the Authentication to None.įor iPads and iPhones use the settings as outlined on the Charter help page for iPhones. Under the Account Information tab, make sure the outgoing server is. Make sure you have the correct server name - .įinally, use the pop up menu for the Outgoing Mail Server and choose to Edit the SMTP server list. Next, go back to the Account Information tab. In the bottom section change the Port to 110 and uncheck the Use SSL box. Then choose the Advanced tab on the right side of the window. Hilight your newly created Charter account. Once you get the account set up, look under Preferences > Accounts tab. You can and should definitely set it up as a POP account for desktop Macs. When you add a Charter mail account, you may need to do some of the things manually. This is in conflilct with the settings that Charter tells you to put in. Charter responds back that it is an IMAP account. Mail tries to be helpful and queries the servere for what settings it can use. Now see what I mean about Charter website not saying what to input to get this all to work? I'd again appreciate anyone who NOW has working Mac Mail to reply with more exact settings they use.įor desktop Macs, you need to change some settings after Mail "helps" you add the Charter account. Next in Accounts, chosing ADVANCED tab, do you put in Port 110 or 995? Do you check "use SSL" or uncheck it? (Charter website says to always use SSL, we tried both, and still not connect) then in box next to AUTHENTICATION, do you leave it blank with nothing chosen, or choose PASSWORD? What about "use IDLE command if the server supports it"? Charter web site says nothing about that either.

Under Mac Mail Pref's/Account information/Outgoing Mail Server(SMTP), then click button and choose "EDIT SMTP SERVER LIST": Authentication: Do I choose NONE or PASSWORD? DOI leave Username and Password blank or input info? Do I put whole email address or just username in front of the part? Do I choose in there "Use deafult ports (25,465, 587)" or "use custom port" and input "25" there? (I ask because we tried that group port setting, and unchecking SSL and leaving username and password blank, then we tried putting it in and checking and unchecking, nothing worked, would not connect. Here's what Charter site did NOT tell one to put in: We can't find ANYTHING that works 😟 Thanks ahead for help! We tried bypassing SSL as stated above and it ended up making the ACCOUNT TYPE "imap" and even my changing the "incoming mail server" back to pop and it still shows imap as type, so not sure if that makes it not connect. but after that would someone PLEASE send exact account settings in EVERY area for INCOMING and OUTGOING server settings that WORK? (ie: when to use SSL, when not to use SSL which port settings where when to authenticate with password when not to,etc). +Then Save again, It will say account may not work. +If you get an SSL message giving you a Yes or No option. We deleted ALL accounts, and trying to start fresh, and after entering username and password get the "can't connect secrurely through server error. I'm trying to help my sister-all day,and still can't connect, so appreciate help from anyone with currently RUNNING MAC MAIL settings for that WORK!
